Roles and responsibilities

A "lifting operation" is an organised activity for lifting or lowering a load using lifting equipment. "Lifting equipment" includes cranes, hoists, forklifts fitted with lifting attachments, and lifting accessories such as slings, shackles, chains and eyebolts used to attach a load to the equipment. Under frameworks such as the UK's LOLER 1998, lifting operations must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised, and carried out safely.

Common roles on a lifting team

  • Appointed person: plans the lifting operation, or approves the lift plan for routine, repetitive lifts, and has the competence and authority to do so.
  • Lift supervisor: oversees the lift on site, confirms the plan is being followed, and can stop the lift if conditions change.
  • Slinger/signaller (banksman): selects and attaches lifting accessories correctly, and directs the crane or hoist operator using agreed hand signals or radio communication.
  • Crane or hoist operator: operates the lifting equipment within its rated capacity and the operator's training and certification.

These roles require specific, accredited, hands-on training and, in most jurisdictions, formal certification or a documented competence assessment. Completing this awareness course does not make you competent to perform any of them.

Planning a lift

Every lifting operation needs planning that is proportionate to its risk. A routine lift, such as a repeated, well-understood movement with unchanging equipment and loads, may be covered by a generic risk assessment. A non-routine lift, such as an unusual, heavy, high-risk or one-off lift, needs its own written lift plan.

A lift plan typically considers

  • The weight, dimensions, centre of gravity and condition of the load, and whether the weight is confirmed or estimated.
  • The safe working load, or rated capacity, of the crane, hoist and every lifting accessory used, with an appropriate safety margin.
  • Ground conditions, outrigger or support requirements, and the effect of wind, weather and visibility.
  • The lifting path, height, and any obstructions, overhead power lines or other hazards along the route.
  • Who will supervise, sling and signal, and how communication will work, including a plan for what happens if radio contact is lost.
  • What happens if the lift needs to be stopped or the load needs to be safely set down partway through.

Never assume a load's weight from its appearance. Confirm it from documentation, weighing, or a competent estimate, and always work within the rated capacity of the weakest item in the lifting arrangement, not just the crane's maximum capacity.

Equipment checks and thorough examination

Lifting equipment and accessories need both routine pre-use checks by the user and periodic statutory thorough examination by a competent person, recorded in writing. Under LOLER, lifting equipment for lifting people is thoroughly examined at least every 6 months, and other lifting equipment and accessories at least every 12 months, or in line with an examination scheme, whichever is more frequent, and always after any event likely to have affected its safety.

Before use, check for

  • Slings: cuts, fraying, burns, chemical damage, deformed fittings, and legible, undamaged identification and rated capacity markings.
  • Shackles and hooks: distortion, cracks, worn or missing pins, a functioning safety latch, and correct rated capacity for the load.
  • Chains: stretched or bent links, nicks, gouges, and corrosion beyond what is acceptable under the manufacturer's guidance.
  • The crane or hoist itself: current thorough examination certificate, functioning safety devices and limit switches, and no visible damage to wire ropes, hooks or structural components.

If any item shows damage, missing markings, or has passed its examination due date, take it out of service, tag it clearly, and report it. Never use damaged or unmarked lifting accessories, and never improvise a lifting point that was not designed and rated for lifting.

Exclusion zones and the limits of awareness training

Exclusion zones

An exclusion zone, or no-go area, is the space around a lift where people must not stand or pass while a load is suspended or the lifting equipment is operating within its working radius. The zone must account for the load's swing radius, the possibility of a dropped load, and the crane's slew and travel path, not just the ground directly beneath the load.

  • Never walk or stand under a suspended load, even briefly, and never allow others to.
  • Keep clear of the area between the load and any fixed structure that could trap or crush someone if the load swings.
  • Barriers, signage and, where needed, a dedicated person controlling access should mark and enforce the exclusion zone.
  • Standard hand signals, agreed radio procedures, or both, should be confirmed before the lift begins, and everyone involved should know how to signal an emergency stop.
A pallet of materials is being lifted past a walkway used by other workers. The correct approach is to close or divert the walkway and mark a clear exclusion zone for the full duration of the lift, not to ask people to "just watch out" while the load passes overhead.

The limits of this course

This course explains general principles behind roles, planning, equipment checks and exclusion zones for mechanical lifting. It does not teach or assess the practical skills of slinging, signalling or operating lifting equipment, and it does not qualify you to plan, supervise or take part in a lifting operation. Those activities require accredited, hands-on training, supervised practice, and, in most jurisdictions, a formal certificate or licence specific to the role and equipment involved.

The assessment has ten questions. A verified learner must complete all lessons and score at least 80%. The certificate confirms awareness-course completion and the recorded knowledge score. It does not authorize you to plan, supervise, sling, signal or operate a lifting operation.
