What ISO 14002-1 is, and what it is for

ISO 14002-1:2019 is titled "Environmental management systems — Guidelines for using ISO 14001 to address environmental aspects and conditions within an environmental topic area — Part 1: General." It is guidance, not a requirements standard: an organization cannot be certified against ISO 14002-1 on its own, the way it can against ISO 14001. Instead, it explains how to apply the environmental management system ISO 14001 already requires to a more focused topic, such as water, climate or resources and waste, rather than treating every environmental aspect as equally undifferentiated.

What Part 1 does

Part 1 sets out the general guidance and common framework that the later, topic-specific parts of the series build on. It does not replace or duplicate anything ISO 14001 already requires; it supplements that framework with sharper, topic-relevant detail. ISO confirmed this edition current after a scheduled review completed in early 2026, so ISO 14002-1:2019 remains the published guidance this course reflects.

Knowledge checkCan an organization be certified against ISO 14002-1 on its own?

No. It is guidance for applying ISO 14001, not a separate certifiable requirements standard.
