What ISO 14001 is, and what it is for

ISO 14001 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It specifies requirements for an environmental management system (EMS), together with guidance for using it. A management system is not a single rule or checklist. It is a coordinated set of policies, processes, roles and resources that an organization uses to run a discipline consistently over time, with clear accountability at every level. ISO 14001 was first published in 1996. The current edition, ISO 14001:2026, was published in April 2026 and replaces ISO 14001:2015; Module 10 covers what changed between the two editions and the transition period for organizations still certified to the earlier one.

Its purpose, and the sustainability pillar it addresses

The standard's stated purpose is to help organizations improve their environmental performance, fulfil their compliance obligations, and achieve their own environmental objectives, addressing the environmental pillar of sustainability alongside social and economic considerations. It applies to the environmental aspects of an organization's activities, products and services that the organization determines it can control or influence, considered from a life cycle perspective, a concept Module 5 covers in more depth. Certification against ISO 14001 is voluntary. An organization can build a management system that follows the standard without ever seeking external certification, or it can seek independent certification once the system is established, a distinction Module 10 covers.

Knowledge checkIs ISO 14001 itself a piece of national or international environmental law?

No. It is a voluntary standard. Organizations still have to identify and comply with the binding environmental legislation that applies to them, separately from any decision about ISO 14001.
