H2S Awareness
Learn why hydrogen sulphide can become fatal without warning, how detection and alarms protect you, and what to do when an alarm activates.

This is awareness training only. It does not authorize entry into an H2S area, gas testing, detector calibration, respiratory protection selection, confined-space entry or rescue. Those activities require a site-specific risk assessment, trained and authorised people, suitable equipment, practical drills and the applicable legal programme. If an H2S alarm activates, follow the site alarm and escape procedure immediately.
Know the hazard
Hydrogen sulphide, written as H2S, is a colourless, toxic and flammable gas. It may occur in oil and gas work, sewers, wastewater systems, manure pits, tanks, excavations and other places where organic material breaks down or sulphur-containing processes are present.
People often associate H2S with a rotten-egg smell. That smell is not a safe warning. The sense of smell can become fatigued quickly, and high concentrations can cause rapid collapse. A person may stop noticing the odour while the gas is still present.
Possible effects
- Eye and breathing irritation.
- Headache, dizziness, weakness or nausea.
- Loss of coordination or the ability to escape.
- Sudden unconsciousness, respiratory arrest and death at high exposure.
H2S is slightly heavier than air, so it can collect in low or poorly ventilated areas. Air movement, temperature, pressure and the release source can move it elsewhere. Never assume that standing higher or upwind makes an untested area safe.
Reference point: US NIOSH lists 100 ppm as immediately dangerous to life or health. This is not a universal alarm setting or permission to enter. Your site's limits and alarm points must come from the applicable law and a competent occupational hygiene assessment.
Detection and controls
You cannot see H2S and you cannot rely on smell. Approved gas detection is the warning system. Depending on the risk, a site may use fixed detectors, area monitors, personal detectors or a combination.
Before entering a designated area
- Know where H2S may be released and review the permit or task briefing.
- Know the detector alarms and the action required for each alarm.
- Check the wind indicator, escape routes, muster point and communication method.
- Confirm that required controls and rescue arrangements are in place.
- Wear the assigned detector in the position and manner stated by the manufacturer and site procedure.
Only trained and authorised people may bump test, calibrate or interpret specialist gas-testing equipment. A detector outside its test or calibration requirements may not warn the user correctly.
Control the source
Prevention may include isolation, draining, purging, ventilation, closed systems, access control and continuous monitoring. Respiratory protection is not a substitute for controlling the release. Selection and use require a formal programme led by competent people.
Tight-fitting respirator seal: Facial hair or stubble must not cross the facepiece sealing surface or interfere with valve function. This does not create a universal ban on beards in every H2S-designated area. Where a tight-fitting facepiece cannot seal, the site's competent respiratory-protection programme must determine whether a suitable alternative, such as approved loose-fitting RPE, is permitted for the task and exposure.
Do not change an alarm setting, silence an alarm, cover a detector or borrow respiratory equipment without authorisation. Stop and report any detector fault or missing control.
Alarm and escape
An H2S alarm means act now. Do not wait for a smell, symptoms or another person's confirmation.
When an alarm activates
- Stop work. Leave equipment in the safest state possible without delaying escape.
- Warn others. Use the approved alarm or communication method while moving away.
- Escape. Follow the designated route. Use the wind indicator and site procedure. Move upwind or crosswind only as the plan directs.
- Go to the muster point. Report to the person taking attendance.
- Stay out. Do not re-enter until the authorised site response confirms that conditions are safe.
Do not remove the detector, return for tools or try to locate the release. Conditions can change faster than a person can recognise.
A personal detector alarms near an open process drain. The worker cannot smell anything. The correct action is still to stop, warn others, leave by the approved route and report at the muster point.
Rescue and emergency response
Unplanned rescue is a known cause of multiple deaths in toxic-gas incidents. A collapsed person may be in an atmosphere that can overcome a second person within moments.
If a person collapses
- Raise the alarm and contact the trained site rescue team or local emergency service.
- Do not enter the affected area unless you are part of the authorised response, the atmosphere has been assessed and the rescue plan is active.
- Keep others out and provide clear information about the location, process, detector alarms and number of people affected.
- Once the person is in a confirmed safe area, trained first-aid personnel should follow the emergency medical procedure.
Entering an unknown or immediately dangerous atmosphere requires specialised respiratory and rescue equipment, including an appropriate positive-pressure breathing apparatus under relevant US NIOSH recommendations. The exact equipment and method must come from the site rescue plan and applicable rules.
